SUSAN BOYLE! (and others) from BRITAINS GOT TALENT

Post  eSilva on Mon Apr 27, 2009 10:38 pm

The media and the internet is going crazy over Britains got talent contestant, Susan Boyle. The 47 yr. old single and unemployed Scot hailing from Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland blew away a cynical and skeptical audience as well as a panel of judges. Being properly dubbed "the woman who shut up Simon Cowell" as she clearly gobsmacked him and everyone who heard her audition with her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" by Les Miserables as she sang, in one word, amazingly.
No one expected such an incredible voice to come from someone like Susan, judging her from her appearance (shaggy curly hair, thick eyebrows and "questionable" attire) which was less then impressive. But she could have gone on stage with a burlap sack on for all I care. Her voice truly struck a cord all through the audience, the judges, myself and all over the world!! You have got to hear her voice!!!!!

Anyway what I wanted to do was to bring some more light to Susan Boyle here on the forum. I would ask you all to watch it and experience it. It not only proves that one cannot judge a book by its cover and it denounces a long lasting superficial view that only the beautiful are worth exposing but it shows us, yes us, how horrible this view is; through the snickering of the audience and our own initial skepticism.

When I was first told to watch her audition I was told she was incredible and I was open to the idea of her voice. When I finally did watch the video my first thought was that she needed some eye brow waxing but I gave her her chance, the benefit of a doubt and though I knew to expect great talent, I was not ready for the magnitude of it all. She truly blew me away. And even though I am a sap and extremely sentimental I have to say that this video had me go through every emotion I have ever experienced, short of pain. It wasn't just her performance that made me feel so many emotions. It was also the audience, the judges and my own first impression. I felt joy, excitement, anticipation, surprise, happiness, anger, sadness, remorse, disgust, contempt, optimism, respect and variations of all of them, really every single emotion.

Sooo...

LISTEN TO HER AUDITION HERE ON YOUTUBE! (Having over 100 Million hits all through the net!!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY&feature=related

Since her appearance on the show, charming Susan Boyle has stirred up so much buzz that video and music from a decade ago has surfaced into the reigns of youtube and all over the internet. Ten years ago she recorded a rendition of "Cry me a River" from Julie London where it is extremely hard to believe that it is HER voice. It is not a hoax people. One has to keep in mind that this was ten years ago. However her voice is simply stunning and really breathtaking as she shows TRUE singing talent. Another track also surfaced where she sings "Killing me softly" which she used in a Demo CD along with "Cry me a River" that she sent to various recording companies but was, sadly, never signed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI2DxkrgpgQ "CRY ME A RIVER"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-pD6kzPFQM "KILLING ME SOFTLY"

Ms. Boyle was also recorded auditioning for another show where she sings but unfortunately was passed along and the mother of the girl who recorded the video was picked up. However it still shows Susans humour as she tries to kick the comedian. However I'm having a tough time finding the video!

There are two other contestants worth taking a look at!

First is 10 yr. old Hollie Steel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RY-BY4YNs0o

and 12 yr. old Shaheen Jafargholi

I'm rooting for Diversity:

Not just because they're from my area (lulz) but because I think they really have talent. Susan's okay, but her voice certainly isn't the best, and this group has worked really really hard to get as good as they are.

Plus the little boy with the fro and the glasses is adorable!

It's not really that I'm rooting for susan that's the point...I'm rooting for susan OUTSIDE of BGT, nstand?

But you're right. If I was rooting for a dance act, i'd root for Diversity over Flawless.
I'm sure that Diversity has worked very very very hard and I do give them tremendous credit for their creativity and how "diverse" they really are however I think you may have completely lost the point i was going for (that's probably because I mentioned the other two acts, making it seem like I'm talking about the show rather then Susans impact) but let me know if i'm wrong, k?

I root for susan because of her story, because of who she is, what she's had to go through to FINALLY get to where she is (better late then never). And think about HOW MUCH TALENT HAS BEEN WASTED because ppl cared too much about the exterior and the need to put up a "show"? I ultimately root for her success outside of BGT, outside of Simon Cowell.

Ya know, I'm not saying that Diversity is bad or anything, they're really good and really entertaining but that's just it..they came off that way. However I'm sure this is based on how I perceive what is and isn't inspirational or breathtaking (although Diversity is the only dance group I can currently think of that is so much more then a just another dance group as well as inspirational). We expected her to pretty much fail. EVEN THE MUSIC INTRODUCING HER WAS PATRONIZING! (not yelling here, just using caps to emphasize, sorry!)
I wouldn't mind if Susan lost the competition, it has nothing to do with the competition and that's what I'm trying to express.

Her impact shook something in everyone, in one way or form. Even if she is quickly forgotten and all the hype goes away but for an instant, she changed something. And that is what I'm trying to point out with this thread.

I think people understand what you meant ( I got a bit mislead because you put a link to the other two contestants) Razz

I agree. I think its great that she challenged everyone's perceptions and never gave up. That 'Cry me a River' song was so beautiful. She should have been signed there and then.

Its amazing how someone so ordinary could create something so spectacular and challenge everyone's expectations andd views.

*gets shovel out of her toolshed*
*goes to eSilvas grave, digs her up*
*takes her body and connects it to various car batteries* (see Tim Burton's Frankenweenie for a detailed explanation)
*turns on ignition of said cars, eSilva reanimates*

yes, i heard about her and there's no doubt in my mind that she can sing and well. look how many years it took for people to notice her. There are a whole bunch of very deserving people that never get their due recognition because nobody's paying any attention. I swear to you, just like everything else in this life, it is all about who you know. Talent can help you but not much. Looks and personality can help a little more. But if you know people or connections you are so in. My point (and yes, i do have one) is that talent and work ethic sometimes count for shit. I'm just saying. lol!

EmilyEli-x: Im sorry for having mislead you!! wasn't my intent!

That is a really good point. I've realized that that also applies in every day life. As well as in professions that are frequently changing (which is just about every one out there- except for historians! lol with some exceptions)
She's been stuck in blackburn and as much as she tried to expose herself she kept getting shot down. She has some success but that was all local. I'm glad to know that it can actually happen. Even if she doesnt get very far in her career it will inevitably inspire others into thinking something along the lines of "Who cares what my appearance is, I have talent and I have just as much right as anyone to show it". I don't know if its the artist in me but that's definitely how I felt, although I don't sing very well in english (i'm much better in spanish).

She had a make over Sad. I had mixed emotions but who more then her is deserving of a make over after being care giver to her mother!

*hugs bryterlayter* thanks for the reanimation but crap...I'm a zombie now! *bites*

Re: SUSAN BOYLE! (and others) from BRITAINS GOT TALENT

Post  Joneko on Fri May 01, 2009 12:41 pm

Personally it's been hard for me to get very swept up in the Susan Boyle thing. I mean, I think that it's about time she had her break, certainly. But I think that while she's a good vocalist she's not "homg the best vocalist in the universe", like a lot of people, and even media, have been saying.

I think more than anything else, people were shocked by her appearance and the fact that she *did* have such a wonderful voice. Which is unfair, a total shame, and probably why she didn't get very far on her own. I'm glad she got the attention she deserves, but I don't think the rest of that attention is because she's a star. I think it's backhanded complimenting, a sort of...almost a joke on her. It's so many less genuine people going "I can't believe such a voice came out of that."

And I knew she would end up getting a makeover and hoped it wouldn't be...extreme. I don't want her to lose herself just because of everyone else's attitude. Personally, I would love to see her do musical stage-acting instead of heading into anything 'pop'-ish. She does have great talent for that.

Joneko, I agree, based on that one performance, but have you heard her cover of Cry Me A River? Its really beautiful. Her voice might not be the best but it has a nice sound to it. Smile
There was another guy on today who looked ordinary but had the most amazing voice with amazing power behind it, and he was so nervous, bless him. Did anyone see it?

Didn't see the new guy but I did in fact hear her cover. She does have a beautiful voice, that I'm certainly not refuting. And maybe she's got a uniquely beautiful voice for reality tv. But the way people reacted, I think, was not because of her voice being as good as it was so much as her voice being as good as it was and coming from her.

For example, I think if someone had played them her cover and told them some young pretty thing did it, or even an older pretty thing, they would have said wow, that's a great voice. But they wouldn't have gotten the same standing ovation IMO.

I think Susan Boyle is the most. Maybe there are things that I picked up from her voice that others did it, but in my humble opinion she's the best vocalist I've ever heard. Period.

Q: Do any of you actually know anything about singing?
Just asking here, because whenever there is a song contest on TV everyone seems to think that they know a shitload about singing.
But come on, lets face it, most of us dont. My Sister does being a singer and all but the rest of us mortals dont really know shit.
So why dont we let the experts on TV and in the industry say who needs refinement and who doesnt they get money to know, we just think we know.

If they say she rules, then she probably does, but lets not sit here behind our TVs and think we know everything.

Q: Has anyone claimed to know a shitload about singing?

One doesn't need to know the technicalities of music in order to enjoy it or express their personal opinions over someones singing voice. Like beauty, it is in the "eye" of the beholder. In this case, Ear. Therefore anyone expressing an opinion with or without the education "required" to make a judgement doesn't really matter in order to appreciate.

add on; No one is claiming to know more then the pros, they're the pros for a reason Smile

Look sorry if I sounded all up in your face or anything. But that wasnt really the thing I was trying to do, I am just sick and tired of people talking like they know more than the judges and that annoys the crap out of me.

Did I sound like that? Hmm.....scratch

Well as a writer I would assume that you understood that even though your readers may not know the know how's or to's of writing, they can at least -feel- what you write, correct? If I make sense, that is what I'm trying to express when I speak about susan boyle. Not once have I, personally, said that I know more then the judges nor the professionals man!!! lol. yeah I don't like people who know close to nothing about a subject and begin to claim such and such either...bastards. But not everyone is ignorant, so it's never safe to assume or project your own distaste of certain people unto innocent bystanders! If I ever begin to act like I know more then I actually do about something or other, let me know and bring me back to earth! xD.

Stephanie Meyers can't write for shit according to most people who are considered experts at writing but she still makes millions of dollars off Twilight.

Sometimes what an expert calls "refined" is not appealling to a person.

it's all opinion in the end anyway.
