Gays and lesbians in games/movies/music etc

Post  greven on Tue Feb 03, 2009 9:13 am

So I am a gamer and joining this forum actually got me thinking about how games movies and musik all treats gayness (I will just use it as a general term) as a tool to promote their games.
There was the mass effect "scandal" where you could have sex with another a blue alien lady, (though her spicies technicly does not have genders, they reproduce through strong feelings, but they have female bodies) and that alone made a huge splash in the gaming comunity where every nerd like myself became thrilled by the thought of hot alien les sex.
Then there is Fear effect 2 that is known for one thing and one thing only, the fact that the two main pothagonists were lesbians, and the game sold like water in a dessert for that reason.
Then there were the two Rusians chicks who build there intire singing career on faking being lesbians.

There is one good thing though.
I got my hands on Fable 2 a few weeks ago and just today I found a quest called Blind date where a farmer asks you to score a date for his son. Trying to get a few pointers, I got myself a little conversation with him and it turned out that he was gay, so you can get him a male date or a female. I got him a male one of course and returned to the farmer and his son. With the players help the son then confronts his farther with his sexuality, and after a bit of talking the father excepts his sons sexuality and they move to town and live hapily ever after.
I actually think this is a pretty good thing, the gay thing is not blown out of proportions, instead it is a story of a man who is in doubt of how to tell his dad about him being gay.

You as the player can also be gay/lesbian, and get a hosband/wife acordingly, I think you can even cross dress, not sure though I will have to check that out.

Lots of media products are beginning to break down sexuality and gender barriers. I'm really liking it. :3

I was just trying to remember the name of these two as I started reading through Simply sarah, and after a while the name pops into my head. Tatoo! Now the awesome thing is that the very next page of simply sarah is this: Just plain epic

I've always felt really offended about how they sold their fake sexuality. :( It bothers me even more that I like their music. It's so hard to explain!! I'll tell people that "I don't like the band tatu, but I like their music." DDDX

I feel the exact opposite about Pink. I love her hardcore, semi-feminist image, but I don't have any special feeling about her music.

Mass Effect was loudly targeted by people for having a "lesbian alien sex scene". If you played the main character as female you did sort of have a lesbian romance option, though it was mitigated by the fact that the species of the romantic interest only had one gender (that looks female because they are mammals and do nurse their young). On the other hand, you had no male/male romantic options. Bioware was more daring with Jade Empire, where there was a male/male and a female/female (and for that matter a male/female/female) romantic option.

As for Fear Effect 2? I loved that game. I loved Fear Effect 1, too. I thought the characters were very well done and excellently voice acted. The gameplay was solid and the storyline was very interesting. I wish they had gone ahead with plans for the third in the series. The relationship between the two female leads was, sometimes, what I like to call Penthouse lesbianism. Lesbian acts designed more for titilating men than for any sort of real value. At the same time, it was very clear that these two women also cared deeply for each other. So, its a half win, I suppose, for a good portrayal of gay characters in video games.

I am well aware of the one gender fact here, so it is actually kind of a stretch to even call it a lesbian scene, but you tell that to FoxTV that was really smelling blood here.
Another thing that not nearly as many people are aware of is the fact that there are actually TWO "Alien lesbian sex scenes" Through a special side quest and a special path through the following dialoge tree, the player can actually have sex with the galaxy's most famous maseus.
But when it comes down to it then these scenes are less revealing than your average bond movie, and the sex is actually based far more in the realm of feelings than the one of physical needs.

I must admit never to have played the game myself, but I do know from countless of fora's that the one thing it is best known for is its lesbianism. I wouldnt call it a half win or even a quarter win, because it is not how the game shows them, that is important, it is how it is seen by the gamers who play it. And for the most part this is underpriviledged kids who will spread the word of the game like a wildfire, with little else mentioned than the fact that you play as a lesbian duo.
So yeah, good try, but better luck next time.

The majority of gamers tend to be middle class. I wouldn't worry too much about any negative effects from the game, though. Its old enough that you'd be lucky to find it on the shelf of the local Gamestop (especially since they no longer sell PS1 games). I also wouldn't call "being known for its lesbianism" a loss. That's what the L Word is known for. Queer Eye For the Straight Guy's hook was the homosexuality of the designers. If, when all is said and done, the homosexuality in a media piece exists strictly to pull in people and there's nothing positive in how its portrayed, that's a loss. The ad campaign that went along with the game? Yeah, that sucked, because they pandered to get their core audience (white, 15-30 year old males) to come in. The game itself, I think, has some very good points.

It's interesting... I always wondered... why do boys want lesbians to make out in front of them? Do they know they don't get to join in?

I should say much, I look at all different kinds of various hentai/porn so I suppose that makes me just as voyeuristic.

Why do we like it?
I... I dont know...
I think it might have something to do with the fact that we dont want to look at the guys in porn movies, we dont want to look at the cock, we want to look at hot girls having a sexy time, if that is with another girl you actually remove the part we dont like, and added another dose of what we like.

That is at least the only thing I can think off.

Sadly, there's an increasing phenomenon of more or less straight girls making out with each other as a way of flirting with boys present. Sad

Wuh-wuh-wuh-Wait! Are you saying it was #1!?

My radio has been broken for about 3 years now so I don't know as much about popular music as I'm expected to. I only knew that song because it was SOOOO popular. But #1!?

-I wiki'd it-
DDD:
Oh my God.

Well, I posted on Simply Sarah after Gerry said that her girlfriend had dumped her for boys. So this would be my concept of me being started. I could easily branch off of any of the points I made. I'll paste the post here:

Fly Hue wrote:OUCH. Okay, Imma gonna rant now, so prepare yourselves!
THIS is why I have an issue with that one electronica song that was popular a few months/weeks back. The "I Kissed a Girl" or.. I don't know much about it really, my radio has been broken for years. DX
Anyhow, as much people in the gay community embraced the song, I was offended from the very first time I heard it because the lyrics clearly expressed that the singer was 'experimenting'. You shouldn't EXPERIMENT with another person's feelings! I would HATE to be on the other end of that. The fear of being 'experimented' on has brought my guards so far up that I can't comfortably allow myself to date 'bi' people. And the concept that a song like that has made the top 40 chart is like all of America saying "It's okay to use gay people, they don't have feelings! They just do it for the sex!" It's enough to hear oppressive songs by men bragging about how women are only useful for sex, but WOMEN oppressing each other?! Arrrgh!!!
Okay. I'm done. D:

I can understand liking it a bit, so don't feel too bad. If the lyrics weren't so AWFUL, I'd have really liked the song just based on the musical qualities. I think this is almost the same issue that I'd had with tatu earlier. Except I allow myself to like tatu's music because the lyrics themselves don't piss me off, just that they used the lesbian image.

Golly, I have some good memories to Katy Perry~ XD Screw cherry chapstick, watermelon is yummier.

I quite like the daft, camp, novelty value of it now but it did offend me somewhat at first - not for the experimenting being bi factor, but for the slutty "putting it on for the boys" factor. Pretty much what Tara just said... plus I don't particularly think it's a good song to be playing on national radio where young kids can hear it...? I'm all for kids learning about homosexuality as part of sex ed... but in a way like that? Showing it as something flippant you do while trashed in a nightclub to impress the boys (not to mention while supposedly already in a relationship)? ^^; Of course it happens, but uh, you see my point...

Hey, sorry, going off on a bit of a tangent of the thread here~ XD
