Concept artness (Image-heavy!)

Hey loves,

Thought I might drop some of the original art for Piper by you all. Funny note...I've had the characters of Piper in the works for at least two or three years, and John, Sammy and Simon for more like five or six -- but it wasn't until a little over a year and a half ago that I actually drew Simon for the first time. And drawing him for the first time was so terrifying that I went through three or four styles and...well, more paper than this tree-hugging hippie was proud of.

So, since he's the biggest anomaly and there have already been a few comments via DrunkDuck about how cute he is, this episode of character-design-theater will be "The Problem of Simon" (Aw it's ok baby, you're not ALWAYS a problem. Not that you care. Much.)

Failed attempt 1:

A little closer, but not quite:

This was actually for a Hogwarts roleplay we'd been doing that Simon managed to find a place in as a perfect Slytherin. Though all was not what it seemed. Though some elements of that carry into his character even now, and you'll come to find that later.

So I thought, "Ok. He looks a little generic. How do I make him less generic, and more...Simon?"
Actually, he almost looked like someone I could picture on a sports team. To which Simon said "Fix this, or I will give you migraines for the rest of your life."

Hamelin University is not Hogwarts, so I tried some normal clothes. And lo and behold...he ended up looking like an angry bitter teenager going through an awkward defiance phase.

...hm. Closer. Buuut not quite right. His hair was more natural this time around, but he wasn't as stiff as I wanted. Does Simon look like a sloucher? Well, maybe in high school, but...

AND EUREKA:

Dark, sullen, mopey, anti-social, doesn't look like he eats enough...and asian to boot. (Actually, Simon is half-Japanese, half-French.) My only problem with much of the traditional anime/manga style is that it sometimes makes it hard to express ethnic/racial traits in a character, though a lot of that is because it's born from, in appearance, a very ethnically/racially homogeneous country. SO. I have to play with it, it's a pet peeve.

And after enough playing, and watching Ratatouille too many times:

Somehow, Rei managed to turn this mess into what turned out to be a rather handsome-looking character. With...much incredulity at the fact that no, I hadn't ever drawn him before!

The first of the final three is my favorite and thus the one I use the most for reference. But I should note I purposely made him more baby faced as he's in college and not quite as old as he is in that picture. I also fluffed out his hair and made it curl out more.

Yaaay artistic liscense.

I often wonder why I am the artist when she shows off skills like that.

Yeah sometimes a person who can draw super well can't make comics so much, because it's just a different thing entirely, I guess. But maybe with a different story, or a different time, she'll give it a shot!
