The Devil's Advocate Empty The Devil's Advocate

Post  greven on Wed Mar 04, 2009 5:42 pm

This is a game that is not always allowed on foras so I thought I would run it by all of you before doing anything stupid.

The basic game idea is this: A single person takes on the role as The Devil's Advocate, the job of said individual is very simple: Defend the bad guys. In the end it is a lot more complicated, so let me run you through it step by step.

First things first: The goals of The Devil's Advocate game.
1. To become better in the art of discussion even when you do not believe in the subject you are defending.
2. To become better at looking at subject from a different perspective, allowing you to see things you may not have seen before.

Now to the practical bit.

Mister X is our good little friend who is goign to teach us how to play The Devil's Advocate.

To start things off mister X desides that he wants to be The Devil's Advocate on a subject, lets make the subject piracy (real life, not music), Now mister X sends a message to an admin and asks for permision to create this DA thread. If the admins finds the subject too gross or insulting they can tell him not to post it, if he goes ahead anyway or does not preinform the admins then they can terminate the thread as they see fit.

Lets say X went to the admins and was allowed to make his DA: Piracy thread.
Now with the permission in order X starts working on his defence speach. Now the basic idea is that EVERYONE including X agree's that the subject, in this case piracy is "bad", or in other words evil.
X prepares his speech and then makes his thread containing information on what subject is chosen and his defensive speech. It is now the job of everyone else on the forum to prove him wrong, to contradict or simply present evidence that makes it clear that Piracy is indeed evil.
The discussion goes on as long as it has to, and the winner is declared once the thread have been silent for a period of time (usually a week), the winner is decided through a poll where the users can vote, not on right or wrong, but on who spoke best for their cause.

Here is a basic rule list.
1. No flaming or spamming allowed, only reasonable thoughtful posts are welcome.
2. No specifik events are allowed as there is a chance that users may be emotionally involved in said incident.
3. All subjects for discussion must be approved by an Admin before posting.
4. If the suggestion is turned down by an Admin you are NOT allowed to post it.
5. If a DA defence speech is offensive or wastly different from the accepted one, the Admins can close the thread as they see fit.
6. The DA is never allowed to speak for a cause he himself believes in. As this undermines the idea of the game.

I'm interested. I just didn't post because I had nothing of value to say. X)

Or rather. I posted the EXACT same thing that Rei did, realized it, and deleted my post feeling like an idiot. XD

Ooh, this sounds interesting...
The topic of incest is a hard one, because... I do support love if it truly is love. At the same time, though, any children born from an incestuous situation would NOT be a good thing, and also the whole idea of fathers/brothers/uncles taking advantage of or raping daughters/sons/nephews/nieces/siblings isn't good.
